Today, we are going to answer a very special question for us all, kids… What do you want to do for a living when you grow up? – the teacher asked this to the whole classroom with a big smile on her face. The children were 6 or 7 years old at that moment and they had already started asking similar things to themselves. They knew they will continue growing and that they will become the so-called “adults”. And they also knew adults spent their time on specific things, as their parents did, and to do so they had to have a dream or motivation to study or work in some area related to that goal. The children started answering at once, shouting, being some of them more enthusiastic about their answers than others. There were plenty of “football player!”, “fireman!” or “astronaut!” but the teacher wanted to listen to them one by one, so she came closer to a girl in the first row and asked again – And what about you, Maria?
- I want to be a princess. – said the girl with a great passion and the chest puffed out proudly.
- Princess, uh? And which one will you be? Sleeping Beauty? Cinderella? The Little Mermaid? – asked the teacher one more time.
- No, I won’t be any of them. Those princesses make nothing. I want to be another one. – said Maria, frowning and somehow bothered by the teacher’s question.
- Oh, that’s ok. – said the teacher smiling. – So which one is that, then?
- I want to be princess Leia, teacher. – answered Maria again, smiling as well.
- And why Leia? Leia is not a princess! – some of Maria’s partners said, interrumpting her. She did not lose her temper and answered carefully with an speech that, for sure, was prepared some days ago.
Leia is a princess, of course she is. But people do not understand that she is one because she is not wearing the prettiest dresses and she is not waiting for a prince to come and rescue her. But Leia is better than the other princesses, teacher. And she is better because she does whatever she wants to: she is a princess, but she is not waiting in her palace; someone helps her to escape but she is not rescued and he is not even a prince, he is Han Solo; she is not just a princess, she is also a spy and leads the Rebels. Do you understand why princess Leia is the best, teacher? When I grow up I want to be like her because she is a strong woman, who knows how to be a good person or a strong one when it is necessary and because nobody, not even the evil Darth Vader, can stop her when she puts something in her head. She reaches her goals and saves people. Leia is the best.
Years passed by and the little Maria grew up. And continued growing up. And she left that happy childhood to enter the world of adulthood. A world that made her deciding and choosing, having some hard choices, but at least being them some choices that would put her life on a specific path. The girl, now a woman, chose, made her own path and finally, yes, she achieved what she always wanted to: becoming a princess. But not any princess, because she had no kingdom, no castle, not even a royal family. Her story was another one: she was the leading princess of a company, that company that she created to make her dream come true…her dream of coming true other people’s dreams. The girl had built her own destiny from her childhood’s dream. And she, along lots of other princesses, got her golden throne, the one that was hers since her birth, but obtained through her own effort and dedication.
However, and obviously, not every princess was the same, and not every goal was to have their own company, not at all.
There were princesses with no castle. Princesses that prefered the dragon instead of the prince. Princesses with or without a kingdom. Princesses dressed like a man. Princesses in love with other princesses. Princesses that took care of their children. Princesses that didn’t want to have children. Princesses free to travel around the world and others that wanted to be tied to a place and a person, o several. Even princesses that didn’t want to be princesses at all. Princesses that, in the end, had the option to choose and they chose whatever they wanted to. Who was supposed to choose their lifes? Maybe some writer? Someone who didn’t know about their motivations and worries? On the contrary, the power that belongs to each princess and to each prince, like the princess Leia showed us all, is choosing by yourself, being a normal princess or leading the Rebels, because those actions will have the responsibility on doing unique, special and unrepeatable princesses.
